Why don’t I see all my transactions from the same merchant?
If you made purchases from a merchant but at different locations (eg. coffee chains or fast food restaurants in different cities), these will show up as separate merchants in your activities list - we're working on a fix for this. Tap on a transaction made at the same merchant on your Activity page to view the purchases you have made from that specific location. In a future app update, all transactions will show up under one single merchant even if you visited different locations.
What does a Pending transaction mean?
Whenever you make a purchase, the merchant will check your account for the amount of your purchase to make sure you have a sufficient balance and place a brief hold on these funds. Your transaction will stay in pending until the merchant receives the funds and settles the transaction.
Why did a merchant charge me more? Why is there a hold on my money?
Similar to a pending transaction, some merchants place what's called a pre-authorization hold on cards to ensure there are sufficient funds in your account to cover the purchase plus any tips or incidentals.
It typically takes 3-5 business days for this amount to correct, or settle, to the actual amount of your purchase.
Examples of merchants that place holds:
- Gas stations usually hold $75 even if you are filling up with a different gas amount. You can prepay inside at the cashier if you have a balance less than $75.
- Tipping merchants (usually 15-20%): restaurants, food delivery, salons, etc. This is something that is set by the merchant for when a tip may be added on top of the purchase amount. The correct amount you authorized the merchant to take will settle in 3-5 business days.
What is an International transaction fee?
If you purchased from an international merchant outside of the U.S., either online or in-store, you will see a 3% foreign transaction fee after the transaction settles (typically 3-5 days after purchase). This fee is a pass-through fee from Visa.
Why does it look like I was charged twice for one transaction?
If in your transaction details it looks like you’ve been charged twice, don’t worry. Some merchants process transactions through something called a pre-authorization backout. At first glance, this can look like you’ve been charged twice.
The extra charge will be automatically credited back into your account, so you are charged the correct amount. If you see the double transactions, one of them will show as pending. Unlike a typical transaction, this one will continue to show as pending despite you being credited for the amount by the merchant. Again, this may look like a double charge but it is not.
Here are some common merchants that might cause this type of transaction, but not necessarily every time:
- Amazon
- Square terminals
- Apple
- Xbox
